The following are scholarships offered to OASES students:

RE-ENTRY SCHOLARSHIP The Re-Entry Scholarship Fund was created in 1990 and is made possible through community and individual interest in re-entering students. This scholarship ensures that students have access to financial awards based on their needs and commitment to higher education. The amount of the scholarship award may vary annually. Preference will be given to students dedicated to achieving higher educational goals.

FRAN AND DAVID TAYLOR NONTRADITIONAL SCHOLARSHIP This scholarship, established in 1990, is made possible through generous donations by Fran and David Taylor. This scholarship demonstrates the interest of the Taylor family in the achievements of adult nontraditional students in their educational careers. The amount of the scholarship award may vary annually.

SARAH HOADLEY WILSON SCHOLARSHIP FOR NONTRADITIONAL STUDENTS Created in honor of Sarah Hoadley Wilson, a former nontraditional student and a 1992 alumna of UNC Charlotte, this scholarship provides assistance annually to a female student. Initially awarded in 1994, this renewable scholarship fund supports a nontraditional student. Wilson is an honorary member of the Gamma Rho Chapter of Alpha Sigma Lambda, a national honor society at UNC Charlotte for adult students.

NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF WOMEN BUSINESS OWNERS - CHARLOTTE, SUSAN Z. AINSWORTH SCHOLARSHIP The Women Business Owners Association established this scholarship in 1990 for women returning to complete or begin their education at UNC Charlotte. In subsequent years the NAWBO Scholarship Committee renamed the scholarship to reflect its current organizational title. Further, the name memorializes Susan Z. Ainsworth for her strong commitment to continuous learning and her leadership role with business women and entrepreneurs. The scholarship program will provide financial support, professional growth, and mentoring to recipients. An award of $1000 is available on an annual basis to a nontraditional female student.

BONNIE CONE ALTRUSA CLUB SCHOLARSHIP The Bonnie Cone Altrusa Club Scholarship Fund was established in 1983 in honor of Bonnie Ethel Cone who was instrumental in the growth and development of UNC Charlotte. She was the president of Charlotte College, acting chancellor of UNC Charlotte, then vice chancellor for student affairs. This scholarship memorializes Bonnie Cone as a Patron of Excellence of the Foundation of UNC Charlotte. This scholarship provides approximately $500 per academic year with one-half awarded each semester. The scholarship may be renewed and is awarded annually.

MILDRED ENGLISH ALTRUSA SCHOLARSHIP This former Altrusa Club of Charlotte Scholarship was renamed in 2006 the Mildred English Altrusa Scholarship to honor Mildred English for her longstanding commitment to Altrusa and UNC Charlotte. A former employee of UNC Charlotte, Mildred continues to work tirelessly for the university even in her retirement years. Developed in 1950, the Altrusa Club of Charlotte Scholarship Fund established the first scholarship designated to provide financial support at Charlotte College. It may be renewed and is awarded annually.

ALTRUSA VIOLA BILLUE SCHOLARSHIP The Altrusa Viola Billue Scholarship was established in 1999 by the Altrusa International Club of Charlotte and OASES in honor of Viola Billue who was a leader in the Altrusa International Club of Charlotte for many years. This scholarship is available to full-time or part-time female students who demonstrate financial need. Preference will be given to students demonstrating previous academic success. The scholarship is awarded annually and may be renewed. The award may be used for tuition, books and fees. CARL J.

MCEWEN SCHOLARSHIP This scholarship was established in 1961 by members of the McEwen family in memory of Carl J. McEwen. This scholarship is designed to provide financial assistance for students who have financial need and would not otherwise have the opportunity to attend school. Annual awards vary yearly. Scholarships may be used for tuition and fees. One or more scholarships may be given.

MRS. CARL J. MCEWEN SCHOLARSHIP The Mrs. Carl J. McEwen Scholarship was established in 1984 by Bettie Weir McEwen in memory of her late mother. This scholarship is designed to provide financial assistance for students who need and desire to complete an education. Students must demonstrate financial need. Annual awards vary yearly and may be used for tuition and fees. The number of scholarships may vary yearly.

JAMES S. McCORMACK ROTARY SCHOLARSHIP FUND This University City Rotary Club established this scholarship in 1987 in memory of James S. McCormack, a charter member of the University City Rotary Club. In 1999 the family of James S. McCormack endowed the scholarship to provide financial assistance to nontraditional students who are pursuing their academic goals. This scholarship is awarded annually and may be renewed provided all requirements are met.

VIRGINIA D. BUFKIN SCHOLARSHIP The Virginia D. Bufkin Scholarship was established in 1999 by Virginia D. Bufkin, a former nontraditional student and an alumna of UNC Charlotte. The donor is an honorary member of the Gamma Rho Chapter of Alpha Sigma Lambda, a national honor society for adult students at UNC Charlotte. This scholarship represents the donor’s personal commitment to excellence for nontraditional students. The award will be presented annually.

FRIENDS OF UNC CHARLOTTE SCHOLARSHIP Friends of UNC Charlotte established a scholarship program of academic excellence for nontraditional students. Under the leadership of Virginia D. Bufkin, the award program began in 1999. Scholarships are awarded annually.

RUTH MOSS EASTERLING SCHOLARSHIP In 1989 Metropolitan Business and Professional Women (MBPW) established a scholarship in honor of Ruth Moss Easterling, a charter member of MBPW. Ruth Easterling served as state and national president for MBPW. She worked tirelessly for the citizens of North Carolina with a particular interest in women’s issues during her 13-session tenure in the North Carolina House of Representatives. In 2007 the MBPW established the Ruth Moss Easterling Endowment Fund at UNC Charlotte to fund scholarships to deserving students. The annual award provides funds to be used for tuition, books and other educational expenses.

THE NONTRADITIONAL STUDENT ORGANIZATION SCHOLARSHIP An active NonTraditional Student Organization (NTSO) member will be chosen each fall to receive a $300 scholarship to be awarded the following spring semester. This scholarship, supported by the NTSO, will provide financial support towards educational expenses.

THE LU ANN CROMPTON SCHOLARSHIP was established in 2007 by Lu Ann a graduate of UNC Charlotte. Lu Ann received two scholarships through the Office of Adult Students and Evening Services (OASES) while attending UNC Charlotte. This scholarship is designed to assist a non-traditional, single mother, with a 2.5 GPA or better. As with all scholarships through OASES, students must demonstrate financial need.
